I can’t begin to tell you how many times I’ve forgotten my password within the last couple years, which never used to be a problem before SOME STUPID EVIL PIECE OF SHIT who knew nothing about IT Security came out with the idea to force people to make stronger passwords.
You may think it makes your account more secure, but those who are cracking into people’s accounts are not guessing your passwords in this day and age. They’re not sitting there typing weak passwords and even in brute force circumstances, adding a number and special character didn’t change the outcome often enough to justify the outright fascism website security has become.
Most people get your password by tricking you with a page that looks exactly like something you log into on a regular basis or using something called phishing. That is not news, nor is it a new way of cracking into accounts. The fact that we have 2-factor authentication now on top of a mentally cumbersome password proves the uselessness of improving password strength.
Security features are supposed to make sense and maybe recommending stronger passwords was a good idea for a moment when people would make ridiculously common words like “password” or short sequences like “1234” but all forcing “stronger” passwords has done for us is cause more dependency on mobile devices and allow browsers to save their information.
If no one can remember their “stronger” password, it isn’t stronger. It’s just bad customer service. Security is important but bad security doesn’t always mean vulnerable; sometimes it means forcing people to reset their passwords because the one they were forced to make looks nothing like what they originally intended on using to secure the account.
